Resources Leveraged By A Network

I posted this on my blog as well, so for those who read both– apologies! Perhaps its worth a double reminder, though. ;)

I could talk all day long about how many benefits there are to participating in a network, or finding and sharing resources through community and connections. Here’s my example for today:

1. Yesterday I needed information about the results of job creation through entrepreneur center efforts. I did a quick search on Google and found this link to a center in Illinois.

2. Today I contacted the staff at the center and was referred to another organization that has done extensive research in the areas of economic development I’m looking for. Here is a 96-page document they’ve published with relevant information.

3. Within that document, there is more information & examples than I could possibly need.

After less than 20 minutes of effort, by finding the right organization and talking to the right individual, I’ve been directed to a wealth of resources.

I think there are three things that facilitate this kind of rapid-exchange:

1. Undoubtedly, the Internet. How else would I find out about this center in Illinois in only a few minutes?
2. Long distance telecommunications.
3. My willingness to contact and connect with someone.
4. That individual’s preparation and diligence in his job, to know about relevant information & resources.
5. That individual’s willingness to share information & resources with someone unknown.
6. The end organization’s preparation, accomplishment of the task, and public distribution via PDF of the information.

Perhaps we are at most 6 short steps away from finding out the crucial information, contact person, or resource pool that will solve a critical problem.

  • Hmm, 6 degrees of separation between you and any piece of information you want to find…. Interesting thought. :-)

  • HS,

Lol. I read recently about the Kevin Bacon/Six Degrees of Separation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation) concept, so apparently it’s on the back burner of my mind. ;)

There are probably more or less steps than six, it was sort of arbitrary (in fact, if you’ll notice, I start out with the typo, “I think there are three things…”)

What would be really fun would be to see how few steps it takes to find the info/person/solution someone needs… that’d be a fun HDB project.

I think the path to solutions is a LOT shorter than we all anticipate– for example, I’ve desperately needed Word/Excel for a few weeks, but don’t want to cough up the extra $150 right now. Then I remembered that there are usually trial versions, which I downloaded, so now I’ve got an extra 60 days to solve the problem, and in the meantime, can get the work done that I need.

… Yeah, kind of random to use Microsoft Office as an analogy for problem-solving. ;)
