The Entrepreneur Story… Part 1.

In December, Janet Meiners challenged me to do a content business next. :) My friend Danielle also asked me to write an e-book. So did Ryan Byrd. And maybe a couple of others.

The thing is… does anyone buy content, especially e-books? If not e-books, does anyone buy books anyway? Well… would anyone buy a book that I write? Scratch that, would anyone publish a book that I wrote? Let’s take it even more prematurely– can I write a book?!!

These are the questions that I have. I believe that entrepreneurs pursue a project because they’re curious. I’m extremely curious about how content is changing, and how technology affects writers & publishers and can open new opportunities to share and publish information.

So how does The Hundred Dollar Business model fit into writing a book?

Ah. Another thing I’m curious about. Here’s the deal– at face value, it doesn’t. However, this new project will not be strictly about writing a book. It’s about the business & process of selling a book.

I’ve had some opportunities to do freelance in the publishing industry. What is interesting is that many authors or would-be authors think, “I’m going to write a book and make a gazillion dollars.”

Two problems that often crop up are:

1. They don’t actually write the book.

2. They don’t consider that their book must be sell-able. (Marketable, whatever. :) )

For myself, I’ve often wanted to *write a book*, but as of yet, haven’t. I’m curious to see if in this new project I can actually get past that– put together some interesting content, get it into book form, and sell it. Why the heck not.

I did some brainstorming last night, and have the basic plan of what I want to accomplish. Unlike the kiosk project, where we announced the experiment after we’d already planned & arranged it and were getting ready to open at the mall, I’m starting this blog from the onset.

There are valuable things that happen during the planning of a project. :) Besides, it is in this beginning phase where the assumptions are set that end up affecting the whole experience. I’d like to lay it all out and get some feedback before getting started, especially hoping that your great ideas & suggestions will help shape the project.

Now then… on to Part 2… What exactly is this new project?
